FAQ

Utah is home to about 900 native bee species, and most of them are solitary. The most common mason bee in Utah is the blue orchard bee, O. lignaria (Fig. 1). Blue orchard bees collect pollen from a large variety of flowering plants but prefer fruit trees from the family Rosaceae.

Yes, it requires a license. All those who are interested in keeping bees must apply for a license through the Utah Department of Agriculture. The Utah Apiary Program conducts apiary inspections to help beekeepers diagnose pest and disease problems in their hives.

Honey bees are usually picked up and installed by the beekeeper between April and early June. It is wise to order honey bees well ahead of time (e.g. during the winter) as supplies may become restricted. Installing honey bees early in the year gives the colony enough time to grow before winter arrives.
