In Pennsylvania, beekeepers who manage 10 or fewer honey bee colonies make up about 82% of the 4,500 registered beekeepers in PA. Many of these hives are permanently located and managed on the beekeeper’s property. Some of these hobbyists or backyard beekeepers are very experienced, while others are beginners.
Can you keep bees in Pennsylvania?
Yes, you can. Pennsylvania requires that every beekeeper in the Commonwealth be registered. It is recognized that Honey bees are beneficial to humankind and to Pennsylvania in particular by providing both home garden and agricultural pollination services as well as furnishing honey, beeswax, and other useful products.
Do you need a permit to keep bees in PA?
It requires registration. No beekeepers may own or maintain an apiary within the municipality without first registering and maintaining a current permit for all apiaries with the Department as required by the Pennsylvania Bee Law.
