North Carolina Beekeeping Supplies

North Carolina draws crowds of hikers, rock climbers, campers, and other outdoor enthusiasts with its scenic hiking trails through the Appalachian Mountains. The diverse landscape makes it conducive for beekeeping. In fact, the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association has 4,528 active members.

North Carolina offers a diverse landscape for beekeeping with its mountainous range and valleys. In fact, the state recently ranked as one of the top ten states for beekeeping based on the number of hives, according to wncbees.org, with more than 10,000 beekeepers practicing in the state. No wonder the honey bee is considered North Carolina’s state insect.

Mountain Sweet Honey Company is committed to supplying North Carolina beekeepers with packaged bees including superior honey bees, beekeeping supplies, and offering industry-leading customer service. Our apiaries are in the beautiful northeast Georgia mountains, and we ship bees on a weekly schedule from mid-March to May. FAQ

The initial cost of beekeeping can be intimidating to new beekeepers. Getting started with beekeeping can be an expensive hobby often costing around $300 for the hive and around another $100 for bees during the first year (depending on if you purchase a nuc or a package). Most folks recommend starting out with two hives for a variety of important reasons.

To become a Certified Beekeeper, the following steps need to be followed.

  1. Be a current NCSBA member.
  2. Pass a written test, which is administered through a local NCSBA chapter or given at one of the statewide conferences or testing events.
  3. Pass a practical test administered by a Certified Level Beekeeper or higher.
  4. The Practical test will only be valid if given after the candidate successfully passes the Certified Level written exam.

If you can get them early (late April, early May… regionally dependent) we prefer packages over nucs. Any other time of year, a nucleus hive is ideal. In our region, honey bees are available from May until the end of August.
