FAQ

Every city has its own rules and regulations when it comes to beekeeping on residential property. In some places, you are free to keep bees with few restrictions. Some places may require registration or a license. And other cities ban beekeeping outright. You should check local laws to see what your city council says regarding beekeeping.

The minimum lot size required for beekeeping shall be 6,000 square feet. No hive shall be established or kept within 10 feet of a property line.
On average, the consensus on land size is that you can successfully keep bees on 1 to 2-acre land. It is a perfect size not only to keep bees, but it keeps you and your neighbors a safe distance from an active hive, and there are fewer human interruptions for the bees to contend with and less foot traffic to disturb the bees.

Urban beekeeping is the most common beekeeping practice in New Mexico. Here native bees have long thrived in the wide range of growing zones and open spaces, making the state home to one of the most diverse bee populations in the country. All counties in New Mexico offer an agricultural exemption for landowners who place bee colonies on their properties for the production of bee products.
