Located in the New England region of the northeastern U.S., New Hampshire became the first of the British North American colonies to establish a government independent of Great Britain’s authority, and it was the first to establish its own state constitution in 1776. It was the ninth state to ratify the Constitution two years later. Although Concord is the state’s capital, Manchester is the largest city in the state.
Aside from its rich history, New Hampshire also has some of the largest and most spectacular ski mountains on the East Coast. Visitors and residents alike enjoy skiing, snowmobiling, and hiking at sites such as the White Mountain National Forest, which links the Vermont and Maine parts of the Appalachian Trail, and has the Mount Washington Auto Road, where visitors may drive to the top of 6,288-foot Mount Washington.
