FAQ

The Golden Italian honey bee by far is the most common honey bee used by 93% of beekeepers. You will find some good traits which include the following:

  • The Italian does have the best temperament we have encountered. It must be noted that all bees have “good” days and “bad” days. There are no exceptions for the Italian bees too. I recommend if you see your Italian bees become aggressive, just put the hive cover back on the hive and come back another day.  “Good” days far outnumber the “bad” days!
  • Italian bees have an excellent seasonal start in the Spring. The bees will thrive once nectar and pollen start coming into the hive. The Italian queen senses the pollen and nectar and begins to accelerate her brood production.

Overall, Italian honey bees get an “A” from Ray in the Bee Yard!

No, you do not need a license to keep bees in Texas. State law allows qualified landowners to house bees on their property under a Texas Tax Code amendment but it carries strict guidelines that must be followed.

Beekeeping is regulated both at the state and local levels. The state agency tasked with regulating bees is the Texas Apiary Inspection Service (TAIS). In addition to state law, you will also need to consult your local laws to determine whether or not you can have bees on your property.
