A colony of Africanized honey bees, also known as “killer bees,” has been destroyed in Charleston County, according to officials. The Africanized bees are the first to be found in South Carolina in 15 years. Africanized honey bees are not established in South Carolina.

The short answer is, No. There are no such laws in South Carolina that explicitly protect honey bees other than the import or export and disease inspection statutes detailed in Title 46:Chapter 37.

To become a beekeeper in South Carolina, it’s necessary to follow the following steps.

  1. Do your homework. Get educated about bees, and do some readings.
  2. Join a local beekeeper association.
  3. Take the Beginning Beekeeper Short Course.
  4. Apprentice with an experienced beekeeper before getting your own bees.
  5. It is better to not manage than to mismanage.
