Is beekeeping legal in Chicago?
Beekeeping in Chicago is legal, relatively easy, and increasingly popular. Chicago is one of the greatest cities for urban beekeeping around the world. The greater Chicago area is estimated to have over 7,000 honeybee hives! City Hall boasted beehives years before proclaiming the practice officially legal in 2011.
How do I become a beekeeper in Illinois?
To become a beekeeper, it requires them to register their colonies (one or more) with the IDOA. Registration can be done by completing the fillable form accessible on the Apiary webpage, signing the form, and mailing it to the Illinois Department of Agriculture. A registration certificate (including a registration number) is provided to beekeepers who register with the IDOA.
Is beekeeping legal in Illinois?
Bees and Apiaries Act act requires beekeepers to register their colonies with the state. There is no cost of registration. The registration is used to keep track of the number of beehives in the state and each county. It also allows each inspector for each district to know where the colonies are in his or her area so they can easily respond to disease-related issues.
