What is the best way to insulate a hive in the snowy north country?

Living in the colder regions of our country can be challenging to the beekeeper and your honey bees.  Getting through the cold winter months can be done if proper planning takes place.  You will need the proper beekeeping supplies in order to help your honey bees survive.

The first option is to use a insulated hive blanket that will keep the hive warmth in and the cold air out.  These hive blankets are reusable for several years.

The second choice would be to stack bales of hay around your hives and place a sheet of 3/4″ plywood on the top with hay bales on top of the plywood.  You will need a 1.5″ PVC pipe running from the bee hive entrance to the outside.

The third choice is to bring your hives into a barn and let them overwinter in the barn.

Just remember the cold winds from the north is what kills bees during the winter months.
